Causes and Effects of High Blood Pressure and Hypertension
High Blood Pressure Hypertension
Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. High blood pressure that has no known cause is called primary, or essential, hypertension. High blood pressure is a great concern for many people today. High blood pressure is referred to as the silent killer because very often there are no signs or symptoms to reveal this serious and sometimes deadly disease. According to the Mayo Clinic; “Most people with high blood pressure have no signs or symptoms, even if blood pressure readings reach dangerously high levels. Although a few people with early-stage high blood pressure may have dull headaches, dizzy spells or a few more nosebleeds than normal, these signs and symptoms typically don't occur until high blood pressure has reached an advanced — even life-threatening — stage.” Important complications of uncontrolled or poorly treated hypertension include heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, peripheral artery disease, and aortic aneurysms. About 74.5 million people in the United States age 20 and older have high blood pressure. High blood pressure (hypertension) killed 56,561 people in the United States in 2006. Other issues caused by hypertension are; headaches including migraine headaches, vomiting, visual impairment, blindness, convulsions, and paralysis.
As you can see this is a serious subject. There are so many people that are literally walking time bombs wandering around that have no idea that there is a potential problem. There is something near 33% of the American adult population, that is one of every three adults, that have an elevated blood pressure. Nearly 25% of those adults are unaware of the ticking time bomb in their own body. Remember that hypertension is called the silent killer? That’s because without warning or symptom those people suffering from high blood pressure but not controlling it can have a stroke or a heart attack. In most cases blood pressure can be controlled with simple lifestyle changes and dietary supplements. Eating a low sodium, low fat diet and getting a reasonable amount of exercise are key to controlling blood pressure.
Some of the causes that contribute to but are not the only related cause of high blood pressure are;
• Weight; The greater your body mass, the more pressure there is on your artery walls. That's because more blood is produced to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues in your body.
• Activity level; Lack of physical activity tends to increase heart rate, which forces your heart to work harder with each contraction.
• Tobacco use Chemicals in cigarettes and tobacco can damage artery walls.
• Sodium intake; Excessive sodium in the diet can result in fluid retention and high blood pressure, especially in people sensitive to sodium.
• Potassium intake; Low potassium can result in elevated sodium in cells, because the two balance one another.
• Stress; Stress can raise blood pressure.
• Alcohol consumption; Excessive alcohol intake can, over time, increase the risk of heart disease.
• Age; The risk of high blood pressure increases as you get older.
• Family history; High blood pressure often runs in families.
Many of the causes of high blood pressure are issues that can be changed. The changes will not only help to control your blood pressure they will also contribute to your general health and well being. Most of the time health and well being are associated with more energy and vigor for experiencing life from a wonderful new perspective.
Sometimes lifestyle changes aren’t enough to resolve blood pressure problems. If that is the case you can try a number of other alternative solutions to try. Some of those solutions include meditation to control stress, dietary supplements to keep your vascular system free from cholesterol and other fatty blockages or even drugs to thin blood and eliminate the fatty blockages. The medications that many take to lower their blood pressure can cause serious side effects. Some of the side effects are; weakness, tiredness or drowsiness, impotence, cold hands and feet, depression or sluggishness, trouble sleeping or nightmares, slow or fast heartbeat, skin rash, loss of taste or dry mouth, dry, constant cough; stuffy nose or asthma symptoms, ankle swelling, leg cramps or aches in the joints, headache, dizziness or swelling around the eyes, constipation or diarrhea, fever or anemia.
For many people, high blood pressure medicine is truly a blessing. It can effectively lower blood pressure, but some types may cause side effects. There are natural ways to help alleviate this problem by using herbs and proper diet. Grandma’s Herbs has an herbal formula that has been developed to help people suffering from high blood pressure become healthier. A good formula for blood pressure should include herbs that can thin the blood and dilate the vascular system. Thinner blood will help to reduce pressure because there is less resistance as it flow through your veins. Thinner blood coupled with dilated veins is a great combination for lowering blood pressure. That is the beginning, after that you still need a proper diet and a reasonable amount of exercise. All this will work together to help create a healthy blood pressure in the body.
High blood pressure or hypertension can be caused by lack of exercise. If you are overweight, weight loss alone will lower blood pressure. Tobacco (one cigarette raises blood pressure for 30 minutes to an hour), alcohol and lack of calcium can also contribute to high blood pressure. Caffeine is associated with elevations in blood pressure so it is wise to reduce or avoid drinks and foods that are high in caffeine. If the blood pressure is either too high or too low, it will adversely affect the functioning of the brain and can trigger headaches. The two herbs that have shown significant results for people suffering with high blood pressure are cayenne and garlic. Taken separately, these herbs are excellent remedies for many different ailments. Taken together they work synergistically to support the body in maintaining healthy blood pressure.
In a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials of garlic supplements, three trials showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and four in diastolic blood pressure. Researchers concluded that garlic supplements may be of clinical use in patients with mild high blood pressure. Garlic actually has the ability to thin the blood similar to aspirin without harming the lining in the digestive tract. Cayenne is well known as a vasco-dilator. Cayenne has been known to literally open up the veins and capillaries to allow a freer flow of blood. Grandma’s Herbs Blood Pressure is a great formula that contains both of these herbs. It also has many other herbs that have properties that contribute to healthy blood pressure. There are many people who can attest to the fact that it has been instrumental in promoting healthy blood pressure.
