Cholesterol is a substance that is waxy or fatty which occurs naturally in the body and is produced primarily in the liver. There are fats that are called lipids that are found throughout the body called cholesterol. Cholesterol is both produced by our body and consumed when we eat foods like eggs, meats, milk, cheese, and ice cream. Conversely foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains have no lipids or cholesterol in them. Cholesterol is known as one of the bad guys in the body but it isn’t all bad. Cholesterol contributes to some very important body functions. Your body needs cholesterol for nerve function, cell and nerve membrane creation and hormone production. You also use cholesterol to help store unused energy. Cholesterol creates bile salts that break down fats for digestion. All of those functions depend on having healthy levels of cholesterol in your body. It is important to have your cholesterol levels within a healthy range. Too much cholesterol in your body definitely presents a potentially life threatening situation. Cholesterol can be broken down into 3 groups. These groups are referred to as lipoproteins. The three types of lipoproteins are high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density proteins (LDL) and triglycerides (TAG). Experts say HDL prevents arterial disease. HDL does the opposite of LDL. HDL takes the cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver. In the liver it is either broken down or expelled from the body as waste. LDL can increase the risk of arterial disease if levels rise too high. LDL is the type of cholesterol that gains the bad reputation as a health risk. LDL is also the most prevalent form of cholesterol in human blood. (TAG) is a primary form of fat (composed of three fatty acids joined by a glycerol molecule) in the body that is supplied by food and produced within the body. Triglycerides, in association with cholesterol, form the plasma lipids (blood fat). Calories we consume but are not used immediately by our tissues are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. When your body needs energy and there is no food as an energy source, triglycerides will be released from fat cells and used as energy. You've probably heard people call LDL cholesterol "bad cholesterol" and HDL cholesterol "good cholesterol" because of their very different effects on the body. Most cholesterol is LDL cholesterol, and this is the kind that's most likely to clog the blood vessels, keeping blood from flowing through the body the way it should.
Cholesterol Object Lesson Experiment

The cholesterol object lesson involves any type of spaghetti sauce, one quarter pound of hamburger, two pans and two plates. First cook 2 servings of spaghetti noodles. Heat up some store brand (whatever your favorite is) spaghetti sauce (enough for 2 servings). In a separate pan cook the hamburger and drain the excess fats (grease). Divide the spaghetti sauce into two even portions and pour one portion over the hamburger. Divide the noodles into two even portions and place on the plates. Pour the sauce with hamburger in it on one plate of noodles and pour the sauce without hamburger on the other plate of noodles. Here is the easy part; eat the two servings of spaghetti. After you have enjoyed the noodles is when the experiment will really show what animal fats do inside your body.
Now that you have finished your meal you need to rinse the plates off with hot water (no saop). If you have two sinks rinse each plate in separate sinks. While you are rinsing you should notice that the plate and sink without hamburger will rinse right off but the plate with the hamburger in the sauce doesn’t. The fats in the hamburger bind to the plate and the sink. It will actually take some scrubbing and some soap to break the fat down and completely remove the spaghetti sauce.
In this object lesson demonstrates the effects of cholesterol in the blood stream. It shows that animal fats are sticky. It also demonstrates that it takes more effort to cleanse arteries and blood vessels when too much cholesterol is present. And it brings an understanding of how important diet is in the issue of cholesterol.
When too much LDL cholesterol is in the blood stream it tends to collect on walls of the arteries. As it gathers it piles up and becomes hard. The hardened cholesterol forms into plaque and decreases the blood flow. That process is called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis impedes blood flow to the brain, kidneys, heart, genitals and extremities. This is also a major cause of hypertension or high blood pressure. Sedentary people tend to have significantly higher levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) and lower levels of HDL (good cholesterol). Other contributing factors are bodyweight. Overweight or obese people are much more likely to have higher LDL levels and lower HDL levels, compared to people who are of normal weight. Smoking can have quite a considerable effect on LDL levels as well. We all recognize the dangers of smoking when we are speaking of respiratory health, there is more than that. Smoking heightens the risk of stroke and heart attack. Then there is alcohol. Alcohol has a negative effect on the liver.
