HERBAL TINCTURES

Tinctures are solutions of medicinal substances in alcohol (or apple cider vinegar). An alcohol solution dissolves all the chemical properties of a plant into a solution and acts to preserve it for further use. Do not use rubbing alcohol, it is best to use ninety-proof vodka or gin. You can also use eighty-proof brandy or whiskey for short-term tinctures.
Since tinctures are very concentrated extracts of herbs preserved in alcohol, very little is needed. Use from 5 to 15 drops at a time. One drop of tinctures is equal to a teaspoon of the herb juice.

Use 1 pint ninety-proof vodka or gin to 4 ounces of cut or powdered herb. Put the herbs into a jar or bottle, pour the alcohol over them and steep them for two weeks, shaking daily. Then strain out the herbs and label the bottle. You can take drops of the tincture or add it to hot or cold herb teas. Also you can add drops of healing tinctures to oils or fats to create an instant healing ointment.

Vinegar tinctures are excellent for calcium herbs as the vinegar helps the body absorb the calcium. Vinegar tinctures are prepared the same as alcohol tinctures, by steeping the herbs for 14 days, shaking the mixture daily, then straining out the herbs, then the medicinal properties are stored in the vinegar. Be sure to label your bottles.
