Decoctions

When a plant is not soluble in standing cold or boiling hot water, it will often yield its soluble ingredients by simmering in almost boiling water for 30 minutes or more. This is a decoction and is usually used for roots, bark, twigs and berries which require a stronger treatment to extract their medicinal qualities. Fresh herbs should be sliced and dried herbs should either be powdered or well bruised. Simmer in glass, ceramic, earthenware or stainless steel. Do not use aluminum or teflon, also do not use cast iron with astringent herbs. After simmering the herbs in nearly boiling water, you may add leaves and flowers after the heat has been turned off. Strain, then cover and store in a cool place for up to 48 hours.
