Common Poultices
Arnica: dip a cloth in arnica tincture and water and apply to any unbroken skin bruise or sprain. Never use arnica on an open wound.
Cabbage: wash leaf of green cabbage, break ridges or veins, and attach to running sore. Cabbage has an affinity to pus and will draw poisons from the body.
Carrot: use raw grated carrot, or boil and mash the carrot, and crush into a pulp. Leftover juice-extractor pulp may be used for healing purposes. Apply to putrid sores and use raw scrapped carrot pulp on sore nipples.
Comfrey: apply either green mashed leaves, or slightly moistened dried leaves or gummy boiled roots directly to a bruise or sore, or encase in a cotton cloth and apply cloth to the body. Comfrey poultice will reduce swelling and heal skin tears and wounds. It is also excellent to apply as a compress over broken bones.
Garlic: garlic has antibacterial action and drawing power. Use it grated or boiled, added to milk and softened bread. Apply as a compress. It can soak out the poisons or pus.
Onion: pack inflamed, bruised, or injured area in roasted onion, or in an emergency, in raw onions. Onions, like carrots and turnips, have exceptional drawing power.
Plantain: plantain is a common green weed that is often found in lawns. Learn to recognize it, as it in invaluable in first-aid medicine. Apply mashed or crushed leaves on a cut, swollen sore or running sore, or an insect or spider bite. Attach with a clean bandage or elastic cloth. Throw away the pulp when it gets hot and place fresh plantain on wound.
Potato: apply raw grated potato to a bruise, sprain, or black eye, boil or canbuncle.
Slippery elm: the powdered bark of the slippery elm tree is one of the best healing poultices. Make into a paste with very small amount of tepid water, and apply directly to the body or put into a clean cloth. The powder can be added to many other herbs to provide an additional soothing effect. For wounds make a thick paste of equal amounts of slippery elm and goldenseal powder and apply directly to the body. Wash with sage tea, then reapply this “golden paste.”
